Rain, Hard—With a Chance of Choppers: Amanda & TJ’s Vineyard Wedding

When we last left Amanda and TJ in our previous post, they were slow-dancing in their kitchen and pedaling a tandem bike through the autumn leaves, blissfully unaware of the wild weather their wedding day had in store for them.

They chose to say their vows at a stunning local vineyard, a space that held a special place in their hearts because they had spent countless weekends there attending free outdoor concerts and art shows. As photographers, we were absolutely thrilled. It was our first time capturing a wedding at this specific venue, and having privileged access to spaces normally hidden from the public—from the sprawling rows of vines to the rooms lined with massive wooden casks—felt like a creative dream come true.

For the first half of the week, everything felt incredibly normal. The couple was relaxed, glowing, and simply happy to have their families flying into town. But as Wednesday rolled around, the forecast took a sharp turn. A threat of rain quickly escalated into a promise of severe thunderstorms. We counseled them as best as we could, knowing that an outdoor vineyard wedding was suddenly facing some serious logistical hurdles. The venue was relatively new, and their only backup plan to accommodate the guest count was to erect large tents. The indoor space could only hold about sixty percent of the attendees, meaning a seated indoor dinner wasn’t going to be an option.

Remarkably, Amanda and TJ simply didn’t care. While most couples might have panicked, they accepted the turn in the weather with a breathtaking amount of grace. By Friday night, the forecast looked genuinely abysmal for Saturday, yet during their rehearsal dinner, they were both jovial, radiant, and just fiercely excited to get married.

Saturday morning dawned with gray, overcast clouds, but thankfully, nothing threatening. A light drizzle fell off and on, eventually halting about two hours before the ceremony. Taking the gloom as a stroke of luck, we rushed the couple and their wedding party out onto the gorgeous grounds. We moved quickly, carefully choosing simple spots to shoot to ensure Amanda’s beautiful dress stayed perfectly clean and dry, laughing and promising her that we could always swap the gloomy sky for happier times in the editing room.

Then, exactly thirty minutes before the ceremony was set to begin, the rain returned. It wasn’t a torrential downpour, but it was enough to force everyone to huddle beneath the massive white tents, crossing our fingers that the skies would clear so the guests slated to eat outside wouldn’t be doing so in a puddle.

True to form, Amanda remained completely unfazed. In fact, there was a pure, undeniable delight in her eyes as she walked toward the tents with her father, letting a little rain fall on her shoulders. Both of them were smiling from ear to ear, anchoring the entire space with their joy.

The ceremony proceeded beautifully under the canvas. The readers shared their pieces, the couple shared their hearts, and everything was moving smoothly toward the big moment. Their officiant, a dear friend of theirs, was just beginning to lead them into their final vows when the unmistakable, deafening sound of a massive helicopter began spinning up from a nearby hospital.

Sensing the impending roar, their officiant nervously hurried his speech to get them to the “I do.” But timing is a funny thing. Just as Amanda and TJ opened their mouths to speak the most important words of their lives, the helicopter flew directly over the tents. The noise was absolute, drowning out every single syllable.

Without missing a beat, Amanda and TJ turned to face their gathered family and friends and screamed “I DO!!” at the absolute top of their lungs over the roar of the chopper.

The crowd erupted into roaring laughter and cheers. They shared their first kiss as husband and wife and proudly marched back down the aisle, their faces painted with the purest, most triumphant joy we have ever seen.

And miraculously, within minutes of that helicopter fading into the distance, the rain simply stopped. The clouds held their breath for the rest of the evening, and not a single drop fell as everyone gathered at the outdoor high-top tables, eating, drinking, and celebrating exactly as the couple had originally hoped.

Amanda and TJ are, by far, one of the absolute favorite couples we have ever had the privilege of working with, and we are incredibly proud to feature them as the very first wedding story on our blog. They set a gold standard for us that we will carry into every wedding we shoot: no matter what the sky does, no matter what the logistics dictate, and no matter how loud the helicopters are, at the end of the day, two happy people are going to get married. And that is truly all that matters.
